4) May I bring my children or baby to classes?
The classes are not set up to accommodate children. Also, the classes are paced so that it could be a challenge to fully participate with a newborn to care for. Another consideration is that for my home classes (BOLRC) the temperature is generally kept around 68 F so everyone, including babies would need to layer clothing to stay warm.
However, if the class host is agreeable then I would be open to a nursing infant in arms to be present as long as they are quiet. The mother of the baby also needs to be able to complete all of the hands-on skills provided in the class in order to be eligible for an eCard.
We have actually had good experiences with babies with it understood that a fussy baby would need to be taken out until settled down so that others are not distracted.
In my years of teaching, while most mothers have opted to not bring babies because of the focus and pacing of the classes, others have made it work. In fact, once we had three, three-month olds attending a class and they all did fine.

5) When will I get my eCards?
Your new eCards (electronic cards) will be released for you to access online once you have completed all the class requirements. This includes completing the online prerequisites, paying for and successfully completing the skills class with me and submitting the required final online evaluation on the RQI site. Once all this is done cards can be released within 3 business days of class.

Fortunately, there isn't a charge involved since it is an eCard. For NRP you only have to login to your NRP/RQI page or call their support number.
For your BLS eCard go to the heart.org/mycards website and provide your name, email and the answer to a security question or call their support number.

Yes, refunds are provided. If unable to attend class let me know by e-mail or text as soon as you know before class starts.
If you have paid electronically a refund is available, minus any charges incurred from your payment method. Or you may choose to apply your payment to another class.
However, individual arrangements are made for each distance class so please see the 'Host a Class' page initially and then your specific class notice in case there are considerations for your class date.

8) May I audit a class?
Yes, students currently carded with me are eligible to audit classes on a space-available basis. The most consistent opportunities to audit are in the classes offered in my home since they are usually smaller.
If you would like to audit a class, please register making the request to audit in the comments section, including the expiration date of your current card(s). You will be contacted closer to the class date about your status.

9) I understand that the NRP Program is offering two options for classes. Which one should I take?
Yes, the NRP 8th Edition NRP class now has two options: NRP Essentials and NRP Advanced.
About the NRP Options
NRP Essentials - Covers Textbook Lessons 1 - 4, includes LMA insertion but does not cover chest compressions.
"appropriate for everyone involved in the care of a newborn and who may be called upon to initiate resuscitation including positive pressure ventilation." Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)"
“NRP Essentials is most appropriate for those assigned responsibility for the newborn at birth when there are no apparent perinatal/neonatal risk factors and for those who care for healthy newborns after birth.” - NRP 8th Edition Busy People Update #1
NRP Advanced - Covers Textbook Lessons 1 - 11, "for Advanced Providers who may participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive pressure ventilation." (NRP)
Increasingly there seems to be movement towards Advanced from NARM, midwifery schools, individual midwifery practices, etc.
In a February 28th communication with Debbie Pulley at NARM she let me know that all CPMs and all student midwives working toward their CPM needs to take NRP Advanced, " Everyone needs advanced NRP." So...

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Due to recent changes including a NARM requirement for anyone carding on March 1st or after to take NRP Advanced, some group practices and midwifery schools are also adopting policies to only accept NRP Advanced. This being the case Breath of Life Classes is now offering NRP Advanced again.
Make the decision of which to take carefully so you won't end up having to retake your online NRP class to get the right one for your needs.
If you are not sure which to take it would be wise to check with your credential provider, school, mentor, birth practice or other place of employment before making your decision. Also, reading the following section below may be helpful.
````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` FOR CPMS
NARM, the North American Registry of Midwives developed and oversees the CPM or Certified Professional Midwife credential. The following is from their website.
With the NRP 8th edition update in 2021, the AAP has created two course pathways for providers (see details above).
NRP Advanced Requirement:With the NRP 8th edition update in 2021, the AAP has created two course pathways for providers (see details highlighted below). NARM acknowledges that some of the advanced skills such as IO administration of newborn medications and Umbilical Vein Catheterization are not essential for CPMs who attend Community based births, however we recognize that completion of the NRP Advanced course is important to have a basic understanding of the full AAP NRP algorithm.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Several sources I respect who have been studying this are recommending that NRP Advanced be taken if you're not clear on what to do since it may become required for both CPMS and licensed midwives.
10) What is involved if the class date I want is full and I'm placed on a waiting list?
Once the Registration Page listing mentions that a class is full you would need to register for the class and ask to be placed on the waiting list. Be sure and hold off paying until you are notified that a place has opened up. An email with a link to the class notice will be sent.
Most students on the waiting list choose to go ahead and complete the online work by the deadline mentioned on the class notice. Since class policies have changed this is required to attend the classes.
If a place doesn't open up for your first choice class date the BLS certificate of completion (COC) doesn't expire until 60 days from the date of completion and the NRP COC expires 90 days from the date of completion. That being the case there is margin if a student misses a class date and has to take their classes at a later time.
11) I've finished everything for my classes. How may I access my eCards?
In general, eCards are released within 3 business days of class to students who have completed all requirements. You should receive a notice for each eCard provider with instructions as to how to download your card. If you don't, see the information below for your options.
Hopefully, you'll simply receive a helpful notice from RQI directing you to your card.
Once your NRP eCard is available be sure and access it right away. I'd encourage you to keep both electronic and paper copies for your records. If you have any difficulty in the process you can contact RQI customer support:
